Shodo Wall - “Floating Brushworks” Collection 2021

60 artworks of contemporary caligraphy installed on a large wall and developed during artist’s 4-week residency at NG Art Creative, Provence, France, 2021.

The aim of the project was to showcase variations of artist’s favourite symbols and designs inspired by shodo (art of Japanese Zen caligraphy) . The collection was created simultaneously whilst working on a new performance “A Walk in Between” merging live painting to music with dance/movement. As the time passed, the collection in development became directly influenced by the music and movement done every day, fusing it into the art of abstract caligraphy.

Each caligraphy is unique and painted in a traditional shodo way; in the ‘moment’, in one breath and no correction permitted afterwards. Created using black Japanese Sumi ink on an Japanese paper. A mix of tools have been used to give artworks special effects including 3 different Japanese brushes (soft, medium and stiff) and 3 variations of paper (30mm & white rice paper, 50mm & light texture rice paper, 50mm bamboo paper).

Please see the gallery below for photographs from the exhibition.
Limited number of works is available for sale in the shop.
